Multiple Instances of Google Talk




Google TalkMany of you should be knowing this. This trick (based on a parameter) helps you open multiple instances of your GTalk (Client/Software version) which basically is limited to a single instance. To override this, you will have to run Google Talk’s executable file (exe) with a parameter. You can do this in many ways – by directly passing the parameter or by creating a shortcut to Google Talk with its parameter.

Advanced

  • Run Google Talk with the parameter “ /nomutex“.

or Modifying its Shortcut

  • You should have a shortcut either in Desktop or in Start Menu (Start->Programs)
  • Right-Click the shortcut and open its Properties
  • Choose the “Shortcut” Tab
  • In the Target text box, you’ll should be able to find its similar to this – C:\Program Files\Google\Google Talk\googletalk.exe (with quotes)
  • Add “ /nomutex” (without quotes) so that it looks like – C:\Program Files\Google\Google Talk\googletalk.exe” /nomutex(with quotes)
  • Click OK to close it
  • Every time you open using this shortcut, you’ll be presented with a new instance of GTalk.

or Using “Run”

  • Open Run (Start->Run)
  • If Google Talk is installed in Program Files in your Windows Drive, enter%programfiles%\Google\Google Talk\googletalk.exe” /nomutex (with quotes) and press Enter
  • If Google Talk is installed in a directory other than Program Files, you’ll have to enter its full path. eg:Drive:\FOLDER\googletalk.exe” /nomutex (with quotes) and press Enter
  • You’ll be presented with a new instance of GTalk.

or Creating a Shortcut

  • Find where Google Talk is actually installed
  • Right Click googletalk.exe and Choose “Create Shortcut” in its context menu
  • Open the Properties (right-click or ALT+RETURN) of the shortcut you created now
  • In the Shortcut tab, add a suffix “ /nomutex” so that it looks like – ..\…\….\googletalk.exe” /nomutex
  • Use the shortcut to open Multiple instances
To disable Multiple instances, simply remove “ /nomutex” and run.
